The idea for "Spanish Summer" is based on two of Johanna's travel interests: less jumping around from city-to-city and visiting the nun who saved her life many years ago on the streets of Bogota, Colombia (who now lives in Valencia). To be totally honest, this trip would hit my checklist pretty nicely as well, since I have been eyeing a return to Spain (particularly Barcelona) for years and I'm also very interested in the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera). At this stage of planning, this is just a sample itinerary, but I believe it would be an absolute gem of a trip in the early part of summer.
Barcelona (5-7 days)
Accommodations: Airbnb or Hotels
Transportation: American and United both have flights from the west coast to Barcelona via their east-coast hubs and booking award flights is doable from far enough in advance. Including connection time, these flights take 14-15 hours to reach their final destination.
Ibiza/Formentera (3-5 days)
Transportation: Ibiza is reachable by low-cost carrier flights for about $50 if booked a few months in advance and the flight takes less than one hour. A return to the mainland via ferry conveniently puts travelers in Valencia, so that's a logical departure from the islands.
Valencia (5-7 days)
Accommodations: IHG and Marriott both have very inexpensive award stays at several hotels in the city-center.
Transportation: There is a 3-hour train connecting Valencia to Barcelona if that's the logical place to catch our flight back to the US.
